• 1. What size battery charger do I need for my lead acid battery I have in my camper?

  A good battery charger rule of thumb for charging a lead acid battery, is using a charger with output current (Amps) of 10-20% of the battery total stored capacity (Ah).

  So, for example if the battery is 12V 100Ah, the charger needs to be minimum of 10A and maximum of 20A. Often splitting the difference at 15% (so a 12V 15A charger) is a good option.

• 2. Do off grid battery chargers need to be mounted in the upright position?

  If mounting your charger permanently, it would be recommended to mount it in an upright position.

• 3. What is the difference between isolated and non-isolated Victron DC to DC chargers?

  An isolated DC-DC charger has one negative connection for each battery and there is no internal connection between the negatives. They are required for systems that need to be isolated which could be for a number of reasons including;

  1. Limiting corrosion (typically marine applications).
  2. Preventing noise on one battery system from affecting the other battery system.

  For systems that do not require isolation, either unit can be used, however the non-isolated unit is cheaper and requires one less wire to be installed.

  In automotive systems, the negative of both batteries is typically connected to the chassis of the vehicle. This is a non-isolated system, therefore either unit will be suitable.
