Product Q&A

Ask Us a Question
  • I am considering pressure washer models of around 2400psi (or larger) for cleaning large concrete areas as my main task. But will this be too powerful to clean vehicles? I don't want to do any vehicle damage.
Hi there - This question has come up since the introduction of pressure cleaners. The answer is simple; Yes you can do damage if you hold it too close on a particular point for a long period. In practice no one would actually do that. Simply holding the lance further away from the vehicle is the answer. If there is paint damage and the spray can get under it, it will peel off like a Band-Aid.

Note that trucking/freight companies for example use much larger pressure washers for their trucks/car fleets, so 2400psi is not too much for your car/other vehicles. In summary, for large concrete areas, a washer above 2000psi is a good idea to speed up the job, and it will also still be suitable for cleaning your vehicles, just use it correctly. Thanks.
  • I'm looking at a petrol pressure washer for preparing a roof to re-paint. The roof is old, it has a lot of built up rust and tough grime, and the old paint needs to be stripped off. What size machine do I need?

Hi Tom, great question. Based on your described requirement, I would recommend you opt for a professional grade petrol pressure washer. For a heavier roof clean as you have described, you will need a washer powered by a minimum 8 horsepower sized engine. The cleaning specifications you are looking for would be a minimum of around 3500PSI and a flow rate of 14 litres per minute or above. This sized pressure washer will strip the roof back to a state ready to re-paint and it will do it in satisfactory time.

I would also suggest that you use a Turbo Head nozzle (these are often an extra accessory for many pressure cleaners), which are great for tough cleaning jobs: the nozzle will spin at a fine degree spray with the water hitting the surface area from multiple angles, which quickly breaks down caked-on dirt and grime.

For any roof cleaning job, you will likely also need an extension hose which is another optional accessory for most pressure washer models.

For lighter roof cleaning requirements where the roof is not as old and you don’t need to strip off rust etc. you can opt for a smaller petrol machines powered by a 5-7 horsepower sized engine and would have a pressure rating of around 2500 – 3500 PSI, with flow rate of around 9-12 litres/minute. These are classified as light trade/heavy domestic machines, which are slightly cheaper than professional grade machines, making them a great price proposition. People do use these slightly smaller machines for jobs similar to your description, however they will take a longer time to complete the task.

Brands such as Powershot, Gerni, Crommelins and Jetwave all have high quality models for both professional and light trade/heavy domestic requirements. Thanks.

  • What are the differences in the type of pumps used in Commercial Grade pressure washers as opposed to Domestic pressure washers?

Howdy, good question! Quality commercial grade pressure washers from brands such as Gerni, Crommelins, Subaru, AR Blue Clean will use brass pump heads which are stronger, can handle more intensive use and have a longer lifetime.

Quality commercial grade pressure washers will also use solid ceramic pistons to avoid corrosion and thus also extending the unit's lifetime.

Domestic pressure washers will typically use an aluminum pump head and solid steel pistons. These are lighter in weight and suit household cleaning requirements. When looking at domestic washers, again its best to opt for a quality brand (as listed above) as they will use non-corrosive aluminum which will prolong the life of the unit, as compared to cheaper brands which are often prone to corrosion.

    Thanks!

  • Do the Crommelins Subaru pressure washers come with thermal relief valve?

Yes, the Crommelins Subaru Pressure Washer range does indeed come with thermal release valves on all models: it involves a valve that releases water when pressure is built up, but the trigger of the gun is not pulled to release, which is designed to protect your unit. Thanks.

  • Hi, I am choosing between an electric Gerni or a petrol washer from either Gerni, Generac, Subaru etc. I like the ease of electric (less maintenance). It will be used to clean my long driveway and house siding (2 stories). What do you recommend?

An electric pressure washer is great for small cleaning around the house and washing the car, but if you have a large driveway, 2nd story home then you’ll likely wish you had the power and portability of a petrol machine. You wont be restricted by the length of the power cable and a petrol model will cut down your cleaning time quite a bit.

Customers love using electric washers for quick domestic jobs, since there's no petrol to deal with. They make cleaning around the home so easy. But cleaning the siding of a 2 story house and large outdoor areas really warrants a petrol unit. I would recommend a petrol washer of around 2400 – 3000PSI in size.

  • With a petrol pressure washer, are there issues with the carby getting clogged up when it only gets used a handful of times per year? If so, is there a solution to this?

Hi Tom, anytime you store a small engine for a long period, it is recommended to put a fuel stabilizer in the fuel tank to avoid build up and blockage in the carburetor. Small bottles of Fuel Stabilizer fluid are availble at service stations or auto retailers.

    Thanks, Steve.

  • What's the best way to gauge the full power of a pressure washer? Is it just the PSI pressure rating?

Hi James, great question. The cleaning power of a pressure washer is a combination of its pressure (PSI rating) and water flow rate (litres per minute).

Often people only consider the PSI number when looking at pressure washer models, but in fact testing shows that a greater water flow rate has a slightly greater influence on overall cleaning effectiveness:

    - Increasing the PSI rating of a pressure washer unit by 10% will increase cleaning effectiveness by 7%

    - Increasing the Water Flow Rate of a pressure washer unit by 10% will increase cleaning effectiveness by 12%

So when comparing pressure models, be sure to consider each model's PSI rating and its Water Flow Rate capacity.

Note there are obviously many other factors on a unit to unit basis which also influences a pressure washer's cleaning capabilty such as; water temperature capacity, type and make of pump, piston types, nozzle & gun types etc.

  • I have moss buildup on my concrete courtyard which is quite thick. I need a pressure washer that will clean down to the concrete in a fairly short period of time. I borrowed an electric 2000psi washer but did not quite cut it. Any advice?

Hi Robert, if the moss build up is quite significant, then I would suggest a pressure washer of around 2400 to 3000psi - this would be appropriate for most tough concrete cleaning tasks and should get the job done quickly.

You can also look at additional accessory nozzles such as turbo heads / turbohammer nozzles / powerspeed nozzles to help make the moss removal task easier and quicker. Some units come with this type of nozzle included, for others it is an additional accessory you'll need to add.  This kind of nozzle spins a zero degree spray in a wider circle at 3000 rotations per minute. The spinning water jet hits the surface area from multiple angles, quickly breaking down the substance you want removed (in your case: moss). As a result, turbo nozzles can cut cleaning time significantly.

    Cheers, Steve

  • What accessory or accessories do you recommend to go with a pressure washer for cleaning outdoor concrete areas?

Hi, for smaller domestic concrete requirements such as standard sized driveways or small patios, you can look at a patio cleaner/surface cleaner accessory - typically a circular head of around 12 inches that minimise splashback, have strong brushes which clean patios, paths, driveways etc. at quick rotation to significantly speed up the cleaning of your home outside areas.

For larger concrete areas or for commercial requirements, look for a nozzle know as a turbo nozzle / turbohammer / powerspeed nozzle - These nozzles will spin a zero degree spray in a wider circle at 3000 rotations per minute. The spinning water jet hits the surface area from multiple angles, quickly breaking down caked-on dirt and grime. As a result, turbo nozzles can cut cleaning time drastically. Excellent for larger concrete areas and for particularly tough to clean surfaces. You can also consider a commercial grade patio/surface cleaner which are made of stainless steel and are available with some commercial grade washers.

In both the domestic and commercial cases, some pressure washer models come with the abovementioned accessory, and some models require the accessory to be added seperately.
