Product Q&A

Will the Cromtech 2400w Inverter Generator handle the start up surge on this aircon unit?
Hi - short answer is yes. The technical departments of RV air conditioning manufacturers (e.g. Dometic, Air Command, Truma etc.) will typically recommend a 2400w or 2800w inverter generator for most RV aircon models.
In our experience, the Yamaha EF2400iS or Cromtech 2400w Inverter Generator are the best generator models to run caravan air-conditioners. These models have the capacity to handle the startup power requirements when the Aircon compressor kicks in.
Of course there are other inverter generator models (slightly bigger or smaller) that customers do use to run their Caravan/Motorhome Air Conditioner - some 2000 - 2200w or 2800 - 3000w generator models. It can depend on the particular setup of the van... However, as mentioned, the most popular models are the Yamaha 2400w or Cromtech 2400w and this is what we would recommend for an RV Aircon also.

With air conditioner ratings, why are some specifications for the same model different between suppliers and information sources relating to things like cooling capacity?
Hi, good question. With ratings such as cooling capacity, two different numbers can both be correct – they can just relate to different requirements and conditions.
Often cooling capacity figures displayed for the product are from the electrical rating conditions. The other main method of testing ratings of air conditioners is to ISO5151 standard – this method is under standardised controlled conditions and allows more direct comparison between models.

What is the difference between "reverse cycle" caravan air conditioners and "heating element" caravan air conditioners?
Hi, great question. These descriptions relate to how the heating/cooling works in air conditioners. ‘Heat Exchange’ units use heat exchange to cool and an electrical heat element to warm. It’s not the most efficient heating method, but it works no matter how cold it is outside.
Reverse cycle units are the more common type and they use a compressor whether heating or cooling. This is more efficient method but for some models can be an issue when there’s ice in the outside air. There are more Reverse Cycle models available and it is the most popular type of RV air conditioner – customers that opt for Heating Element style air conditioners typically plan to spend long periods in cold temperatures.
-
Does the Truma Saphir come with a 240V plug attached to the unit?
The Air Conditioner has a 240V cable pre-wired in, but there is no mains plug on the end. An electrician or qualified electrical contractor may choose to connect a plug or hardwire to the van's electrical system. Ensure to check the regulations in your state for 240V electrical work and engage a qualified tradesperson.
-
Which air outlet should I use to connect the ducting?
The Truma Saphir air conditioner comes with three ducting outlets. You do not have to use all the three, but do ensure you use the outlets closest to the edge of the unit for the longest ducting length. It is the most powerful outlet.
-
What is the heating output like on this Product?
The Truma saphir is a reverse cycle air conditioner rated at approximately 1.7 kW. (Note: Heating is not possible at an outside temperature of less than 4 °C). The unit will always work more effectively in cooling mode compared to heating mode. Truma does sell a dedicated Truma varios gas heater. The electronic control panel from the gas heater can be paired with the Truma underbunk air conditioner. This allows you to control both with the one wall mounted control panel. There is also an “Automatic Climate Control” function, whereby you set the system to “Auto”, then set your desired temperature and the CP Plus will automatically turn on the gas heater when it's too cold, or the AC unit when it's too hot.

What size geni do i need for the truma saphir? I want to put it in the storage compartment in my 5th wheeler as a second air con. Plenty of room.
Hi Jack,
We would recommend a minimum generator size of 2400W for the Truma Saphir. Popular generator models that we sell to run RV Air Con Units include:
-
can this unit be fixed to a wall .will it work on its side Thanks Marty
Hi Marty,
This air conditioner needs to be installed horizontally.
Installing it on the side is not recommended.
-
Does the Truma come a remote sensor to be installed out the cupboard wall ,as if the Truma sapphire is enclosed in a cupboard the the hand held remote might not work !
Hi There,
The Truma Saphir comes with the remote control, and an infrared receiver that can be placed in the van separate to the air conditioner. This gives you full control no matter where the unit is housed.

Thinking of buying a newage poptop caravan. How do these a/c units go on dirt roads and water crossings? Venting from the bottom of the van i'm concerned about dust/water damaging and effecting the cooling efficiency .
Hi There,
The way that these aircondtioners operate, dust is not a concern.
In your situation water ingress would be a huge concern. If you intend to do water crossings where the caravan may be partially submerged this air conditioner would not be recommended.
A light weight rooftop model would be best.
-
How are these units with vibrations? Was thinking of installing it in my boat but go through rough weather regularly.
Hi There,
These air conditioners are designed for use in caravans, campervans, and RV's.
We would not recommend installing it on a boat.
-
Hi,I have 2 questions. Is the air conditioner only able to work with mains power or a generator? Will solar power operate the air conditioner?I noticed the heating will only work if the temperature if 4 degrees or higher. What will happen if I try to
Hi There,
These air conditioners are designed to operate from mains power, or a generator. The only way you could run them on a battery system with solar would be to have a large battery bank with a 2000W inverter. The downside to this is that you will not be able to run the air conditioner for extended periods of time.
Heating is unavailable at temperatures below 4c. There is a very good chance that the unit will freeze up. A dedicated heater (gas or diesel) would be recommended if travelling in cold areas of the country.

I don't want to cut a hole in my floor for the vent. Is there an option to vent via ducting through a side wall?
Hi There,
Unfortunately these air conditioners need to be vented through the floor sorry.
-
We are setting up a camper with 300A/H of High Draw Revolution Lithiums and a Redarc 3000W inverter.......will this run the Saphir OK? We also want to run the Yamaha EF2000IS if that will suit.
Hi There,
We would expect the Truma Saphir to run just fine from the Redarc 3000W inverter. Generally we find that a 2000W inverter generator will also be suitable, especially the Yamaha EF2000iS.
-
Will the Enerdrive ePOWER 1000W Pure Sine Wave Inverter off a 140ah AGM battery run this system?
Hi There,
We would not recommend running the air conditioner off an inverter with that small of a battery bank, sorry.
-
Will my Honda 2kw run this on a short cable?
Hi There,
Whilst we don't sell that generator, we'd expect it to run this a/c just fine.
-
Hi My question is the Truma Saphir Comfort air conditioner inverter starting or thermostat control direct on/off switching type? Thanks
Hi There
The Truma Saphir Comfort is not an inverter Aircon.
It would use a thermostat control on/off switching.
-
Where is the best place to mount the Truma underbunk air conditioner?
Picking a good location will help maximize storage space and the unit's airflow requirements.
- Consider an area with good ventilation. The unit has a circulated air intake that pulls air from inside the van, a supply air intake and a supply air outlet that goes through the floor.
- Consider where you plan to run your ducting. The shorter the ducting the more efficient the air conditioner will be.
- Check beneath your vehicle is clear from obstructions as the intake and outtake pipes sit proud and need clearance
- Keep in mind things like river crossings and ensure you have enough clearance.
-
How is the Saphir controlled?
The Truma Saphir can be controlled wirelessly with the Saphir remote control or the Truma CP plus control panel.
