Invested in a new 4WD toy and want to get it dirty? Or maybe you want to set your beloved 4WD a new challenge? Time to throw the esky, tent and Inverter Generator in the back of the 4WD and get off the beaten track...
Luck for you, Australia has some of the most famous and thrilling 4WD tracks in the world. North, east, south, west or middle of the country - on your doorstep you can explore 4WD tracks that other off-road driving enthusiasts can only dream of.
We've been trying them out (you can thank us later) and have whittled it down to 10 of the best. The ten 4WD tracks that will truly rock your world - and your vehicle!
1. STOCKTON BEACH, NSW
Want to test your beach driving skills? This is your chance. Get to grips with some of the hardest sand driving you will find in Australia. Rev up and down the monster sand dunes. And when you're ready for a rest from driving, kick back on the beach and enjoy everything else Stockton has to offer, such as beach fishing and dune surfing. Great fun for the whole family. You will need a permit to drive on the beach, but at $10 for a day or $30 for an annual permit, it's a small price to pay for all the fun you'll have!
2. BRIDLE TRACK, NSW
Whether you're just trying out the 4WD scene or you're old hat, Bridle Track has plenty to offer. Following the Macquarie River, the track forms part of the original bullock wagon route from Bathurst. In fact, it used to be so rough that riders had to dismount and lead their horses by the bridle - hence the name. Take plenty of breaks to enjoy the spectacular scenery, fish for yabbies and set up camp. This is what being Aussie is all about.
3. DAVIES PLAINS TRACK, VIC
A remote drive through the Victorian High Country, this track meanders through the Murray River region. The track's pretty easy driving, but it's well worth a visit for the camping spots and awesome views of Mt Kosciuszko and Mt Townsend.
4. ELLIS TRACK, VIC
You can't call yourself a four-wheel driver until you've experienced Ellis Track. On the outer eastern side of Melbourne, this 3.5km track packs in steep hills, massive rocks and huge ruts. And when you get to the end, swap with your partner and experience it as a passenger! If you dare, give it a shot in winter when the red clay becomes so slippery you'll winch your way from start to finish.
5. BYFIELD NATIONAL PARK, QLD
At the heart of 4WD country in Central Queensland, you'll find the Byfield National Park. You'll need a permit to drive on the beach and camp - but it's worth it! This is a mecca for 4-wheel driving. Explore Corio Bay, Stockyard Point, Five Rocks and many more off-the-beaten-tracks. Once you've worked up a sweat on the road, cool off in the freshwater creek.
