Victron Orion-Tr Smart 24/12-20A (240W) DC-DC charger, 5 Year Warranty.
The Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger is a professional DC to DC adaptive 3-stage charger with built-in Bluetooth. For use in dual battery systems in vehicles or on boats where the (smart) alternator and the start battery are used to charge the service battery. The unit can be monitored and programmed via Bluetooth and can be remotely controlled via a remote on/off switch and has an engine running detection mechanism. The Orion Tr-Smart charger can be used in 12V or 24V systems and is suitable for both lead acid and lithium batteries. Models are available up to 400W and unlimited multiple units can be connected in parallel to increase output power. Suitable for high temperatures up to 55°C with a full rated output up to 40°C.
Bluetooth Smart enabled
Any Bluetooth enabled smartphone, tablet or other devices can be used to monitor, to change settings and to update the charger when new software features become available.
Fully programmableÂ
- Battery charge algorithm (configurable) or fixed output.
- Smart alternator compatibility: engine running detection mechanism.
Adaptive 3-stage charge algorithm: bulk – absorption – float
- For lead-acid batteries, it is important that during shallow discharges the absorption time is kept short in order to prevent overcharging of the battery. After a deep discharge, the absorption time is automatically increased to make sure that the battery is completely recharged.
- For lithium batteries, absorption time is fixed default 2 hours.
- Alternatively, a fixed output voltage can be chosen.
Remote on-off
A remote on/off switch or relay contact can be connected to a two-pole connector. Alternatively, the H terminal (right) of the two-pole connector can be switched to battery plus, or the L terminal (left) of the two-pole connector can be switched to battery minus (or the chassis of a vehicle, for example).Â
All models are short circuit proof and can be paralleled to increase output current
An unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel.
High temperature protected
The output current will reduce at high ambient temperature.
IP43 protection
When installed with the screw terminals oriented downwards.
Screw terminals
No special tools needed for installation.
Input fuse (not replaceable)
Isolated DC to DC Chargers Vs Non-Isolated DC to DC Chargers:
An isolated DC to DC charger has one negative connection for each battery and there is no internal connection between the negatives. They are required for systems that need to be isolated which could be for a number of reasons including;
- Limiting corrosion (Typically marine applications).
- Preventing noise on one battery system from effecting the other battery system.
For systems that do not require isolation - either unit can be used, but the non-isolated requires one less wire to be installed.
In automotive systems, the negative of both batteries is typically connected to the chassis of the vehicle. This is a non-isolated system, therefore either unit will be suitable.
DC to DC Charger without solar regulator:
The advantage of separating the DC-DC charger from solar regulator
- The DC to DC charger can remain cheaper
- Solar can be charging into the battery system simultaneously with the on-board vehicle charging
- You can purchase the correct solar regulator to match your solar panels, which will provide the best efficiency for solar charging

Product Q&A

I noticed that the Victron DC to DC chargers do not have a solar regulator?Although many competitors include a built solar regulator in their chargers, Victron have chosen to keep this separate. The advantage of this separation is:
- The DC to DC charger can remain cheaper
- Solar can be charging into the battery system simultaneously with the on-board vehicle charging
- You can purchase the correct solar regulator to match your solar panels, which will provide the best efficiency for solar charging

What is the difference between isolated and non-isolated Victron DC to DC chargers? An isolated DC-DC charger has one negative connection for each battery and there is no internal connection between the negatives. This is a non-isolated system, therefore either unit will be suitable.Caravan, RV and 4X4 customers tend to purchase to Non-Isolated Victron DC to DC chargers with the most popular being the 30A 12/12 DC to DC charger. -
What is meant by the term "Smart" DC to DC Charger? The "Smart" means that you can connect your Bluetooth device (Smartphone) to the Victron Charger via the Victron Connect APP. This allows monitoring and setting changes easily and it's a unique feature to Victron energy systems. The VictronConnect App is available in App Store, Google Play, Mac app and Download for Windows.

Can the DC charge be configured to join the batteries to assist to jump the starter battery if needed?Correct me here if I am wrong but the remote switch position does not matter if the engine detection detects the engine not running?
Hi There,
The DCDC charger is not designed in such a way that it can help charge the starter battery, sorry.
If you have engine detection turned on, the use of the remote on/off is not required.
You can review the remote on/off connections in the manual, page 9
